  • Virginia Tech (44-61529) - "My name is Timothy Currey, and I'm with the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Regimental Historians. Part of my job is to research things related to the university that we have very little information on and that not everyone from the university has knowledge of. In researching the university’s efforts during the Second World War, we organized a war bonds campaign to buy a bomber. In researching mission that the bomber flew, I had come across your page about b-29s that flew during the Korean War, the Bomber named Virginia Tech, had the nose number of 38 while with the 45 bomb squadron, 40th bombardment group, 58th bomber wing. The serial number appeared on your page which is,44-61529. If I find another information on this topic I'll share it with you. I also wanted to thank you for keeping obscure information like this publicly accessible for the general public.

Taken to China Lake (Incomplete List)

After being taken out of service, dozens of B-29s found their way to the B-29 Bone Yard at the Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake in California.  The testing center there used many of them as bombing targets for naval aviators.  Occasionally all or parts of the B-29s were rescued from the Bone Yard and used to restore other B-29s for museum display purposes.  Following is an incomplete list of B-29s known to have been at China Lake, not all of which were used in the Korean War.  To add others to the list, contact Lynnita@thekwe.org.
